Tuesday was going to be a much needed paperwork and catch up day for Simcoe and District Humane Society President Cathie Hosken, until a phone call came in from two good Samaritans who had been out magnet fishing from a bridge in the Nanticoke area.
While looking for treasure, they instead found a sad sight.
When they arrived they found twelve deceased guinea pigs, as well as five that they were able to rescue; but sadly one passed over night.
They are unsure when exactly these guinea pigs were dumped, but they have a general timeline.
The guinea pigs they found were a variety of ages, and colours, and some of those colours may help the community to be able to help SDHS and the OPP find out who dumped these cavies.
If you’re interested in adopting one of the four they currently have in their care, it will be a few weeks before they are available.
In the meantime, there are ways that you can help SDHS care for these, and the other animals in their care. Donations are always welcome, and can be made in person at the shelter, or online by emailing finance@s-dhs.ca. You can also help in other ways.
And of course, with all of the cats, kittens, dogs and now guinea pigs in their care, they are in dire need of fosters, and adopters.
If you are someone who has found themselves overwhelmed with caring for any pets in your care, or you know of someone who is, Cathie wants you to know that while rescues everywhere are filled to the brim, they still want you to call.
If you have any information, please contact Simcoe and District Humane Society, the OPP, or Crime Stoppers.
