NorfolkToday is focusing on Seeds Of Success in our Norfolk County.
We spoke to Murry DeKoning, who owns and operating DeKoning Meats – a business that have been in operation since 1955, the same year Murry was born.
It’s a family business, with Murry taking over from his parents, and one that continues to go strong for nearly seven decades.
How does it stay successful? According to Murry it’s down to the basics.
Loyalty and respect go along way as well, with DeKoning having agreements with local farms to bring in cows that are now on their second or third generation now.
When the cows are brought to their facility, they are in charge of all the other steps with Murry joking that the cows walk in with four legs but walk out with two as the customer carries their products out.
And what happens in the back is not a secret, with Murry saying they welcome and even encourage people to suit up and see what happens.
Murry said the truth of the matter is, it is hard work.
If you want to get into the business, you will not have an easy road ahead but it is worth it.
The one good things to come out of the pandemic was that it really shined a light on how important our local producers truly are.
