Coming from a farming community, you might already know that farming can be a dangerous job.
Communications Coordinator for the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association Robin Anderson says that farming stands out in one sobering area of workplace statistics,
Some basic safety recommendations that Anderson makes include ensuring that you’re not working when you’re too tired, as well as maintenance of equipment, and making sure that if you’re working alone, someone knows where you are, and when you’ll be back.
Canada sees approximately 70 fatalities annually related to agriculture annually, and the majority of injuries and fatalities in the agricultural sector involve machinery – with tractor roll overs, pins and strikes the most common type of accident reported.
Anderson says that if you’re a farmer, there’s one particular investment that you might be forgetting to take care of,
It’s important to make smart decisions to protect yourself, and the people that work alongside you, so you should continue to invest in training and safety practices.
Alongside recommending maintaining equipment, Anderson made a few other safety recommendations that everyone can follow,
Anderson also says that at the end of the day, if everyone focuses on mutual respect and caring for each other, creating a safer workplace for everyone will come naturally.
