It was a full house in the Haldimand County Administration Building on Thursday.
Haldimand County Council heard from the community regarding the proposed 15,000 homes in Nanticoke. The rowdy crowd needed to be reminded not to clap, shout, or interrupt multiple times with members of the group being asked to leave the chambers following comments made.
Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley explained the history of the project requiring the Minister’s Zoning Order.
Among the 25 registered speakers was a representative from the developer, Empire Homes.
That was Steven Armstrong. He added it would be a long-term project, which could take between 40 to 50 years before all 15,000 homes are in place.
He made sure to include that no residential units will be beside Stelco, which people have been voicing concerns about.
There were members of the public that spoke both for and against the MZO and overall development.
Thomas Peacock, a resident of Caledonia, spoke against the project.
James Kaspersetz is concerned about the emissions coming from nearby Stelco.
The agenda also included written submissions from Haldimand residents, with around 30 of them being against the MZO and about five in favour of it.
