Norfolk County Mayor Amy Martin was disappointed in a motion passed by council this week.
At their meeting on Tuesday, council looked at a Norfolk County staff recommendation that would require developers to include an additional dwelling unit in 25 per cent of new home builds.
The rule would have meant a new build in Waterford would have four homes that had an additional dwelling unit that could be rented out by the owner of the homes.
John Vallee, who spoke to council on behalf of the developers, said there were concerns about the marketability of these specific homes.
After discussion amendments were made that would make it so the additional dwelling units were not a requirement.
She added she was originally proud to be part of a municipality that would encourage additional units in homes.
Councillor Kim Huffman felt the same way.
She added the residents of Waterford are the exact demographic that these units would benefit.
The goal of the recommendation from county staff was to provide more housing options locally.
The motion passed with only Martin, Huffman, and Tom Masschaele voting against it.
After the vote was taken, Martin addressed council one more time on the topic.
