Norfolk County Council heard how their $10,000 grant to the Downtown Simcoe warming shelter was used this winter.
Last week, Brian Jones and Virginia Lucas, of the Downtown Simcoe Homeless Solutions Roundtable, presented a deputation to council outlining how the project went over the colder months.
That was Jones. He had previously come become council in February to ask for a grant to make the idea a reality.
They were open for 31 evenings between January 24 to March 12, serving 23 unique individuals.
To start, make the most of the money, the shelter was only open when temperatures dropped below -5 Celsius. They then decided to stay open on a consistent basis until they ran out of funds.
Along with feed back from the individuals being served, the group received good feedback from local police as well.
Norfolk Mayor Kristal Chopp mentioned the cost per person to run the facility.
She continued by saying the cost per-person needs to be lowered if this is an ongoing partnership.
The group will be providing a full breakdown of the money spent through the project.
There are plans for next winter in the works to be able to provide a similar service all winter long.
