Giving back to the community around her has always been the goal for Abby Mitchell.
The seven-year-old Port Dover girl was recently recognized for this by being one of the recipients of the 2021 Ontario Junior Citizen Award.
The Lakewood Elementary School student found out about the honour over March Break, and was excited to tell her friends when she returned to school.
Her project, The Abby Post, is a monthly newspaper she distributes for free to the residents of Port Dover.
Abby explained the first story she wrote for the Post.
While the paper is free, Abby sold pens, notebooks, and bags with her logo on them to raise money for the Port Dover Food Bank. Last July she was able to drop off the $3,400 she raised through these sales, and see the food bank in action.
Book reviews, interviews, and future fundraisers for the food bank are in the works.
Abby said she is thinking of becoming a journalist when she’s older.
