On Thursday, it will mark 3 months since the Toronto Police executed a search warrant in Norfolk County, fatally shooting 70-year-old gunsmith Rodger Kotanko.
The families lawyer, Mike Smitiuch, says the Special Investigations Unit still has until March 3rd to complete their investigation, but the family didn’t want to wait to make some form of headway.
The family strongly believes that the search warrant was reckless.
After a long delay to see the search warrant, which involved guns and serial numbers being removed that may have been connected to Kotanko, the family still is confused about the urgency.
Smitiuch says there is also confusion by the family as to why the Toronto Police needed to take on this job solo.
The lawyer says if you do a simple search of the SIU page, you will see a slew of “cleared of wrong doings” but the family is confident that the right outcome will happen.
He adds that the family has had some comfort over the last few weeks due to the community support.
In an email response from Kristy Denette with the Special Investigations Unit, she said “This file is nearing conclusion. It is awaiting review by the director.”
