
The Delhi and District Chamber of Commerce has announced their Citizens of the Year.
Archie Verspeeten and Alice DeGeyter have been named the co-winners of the honour.
Archie and his late wife, Irene, are known for the financial support towards the Delhi Community Health Centre, Norfolk General Hospital, Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital and the Delhi Public Library.
Archie believes these vital community resources need to be available to all.
Alice was recognized for the initiatives she helped bring to the community.
As a member of the Kinette Club of Delhi, she established and oversaw many of the club’s activities, including co-founding the Co-op nursery school, establishing a Donate a Book Program for the Delhi library, developing and running a program to help underprivileged young mothers learn better household skills, teaching babysitting classes, and fulfilling her role as chaperone for the Delhi Tobacco Queen.
Also recognized is Josh Rieck, named the Junior Citizen of the Year.
Josh, a Grade 11 student at Delhi District Secondary School, was selected based on his extensive volunteer hours.
He has spent four years vounteering as a time keeper for Delhi Minor Hockey, and is a volunteer T-Ball coach for Delhi Minor Baseball.
The teen has also spent time volunteering abroad, with two trips to Guatemala. One of the trips was spent helping administer medical assistance to local residents, and the other to promote youth sports and activity.
