Haldimand County Mayor Ken Hewitt issued a statement regarding the Caledonia Protest this afternoon.
In his release, Hewitt said he would “illustrate some facts some do not want to hear”.
Hewitt says that it’s difficult to have any real dialogue without being called racist.
He counters the argument that the land was stolen, explaining that the land was legally bought and paid for.
Hewitt emphasizes that the Federal government was the party responsible for the mismanagement of land over the years.
He says that any issues the protesters have with the Band Council should be worked on from within the territory, adding that he would be happy to work with the parties to help that process along.
Continuing, Hewitt says that the protest has not been peaceful, adding that he’s looking forward to the peaceful end to the illegal occupation.
He adds that he doesn’t support lifting the injunctions and expects the OPP to act on them if the protestors continue to defy the wishes of the majority of Six Nations and Caledonia.
