On Friday, Haldimand County Mayor Ken Hewitt spoke out against the protests in Caledonia, explaining that the County had received support in court for a blanket injunction covering their roads and property.
Hewitt says he doesn’t support the protest and feels that it doesn’t reflect on all the people of Six Nations.
Continuing, he says that he won’t work with or support anyone who thinks acts of civil disobedience are an appropriate way to make their point.
The issue, he says, has nothing to do with the ongoing land claim that has taken over 25 years to get in front of federal courts.
Hewitt says that is an issue that needs addressing, adding that he can appreciate their frustration and anger.
He continues, saying that it’s “deplorable that our governments have treated our indigenous friends in this matter”.
However, Hewitt says that wronging a wrong is not the solution.
