A former Norfolk County cop sits at the heart of the OPP’s Anti-Rackets Branch investigation.
Though the name was never officially released by police, several news agencies have reported the man at the centre of all of this is Larry Renton.
The Star has been in direct contact with individuals who were investing with Renton, and they shared emails and information to the new organization.
Before his retirement in 2016, reports say that Renton briefly operated the investment scheme out of his Police headquarters in Simcoe — then continued from his home.
Reports claim he offered investors 21 to 26 per cent return.
Articles go on to say that at least 40 officers of all ranks and an unknown number of civilians heavily invested in this pitch with Renton racking in an estimated $15 million and $20 million.
Everything ran relatively smoothly under the coronavirus pandemic hit and investors pulled away and new investors were not coming forward with reports saying this essentially crippled the operation.
The Star says, through emails and conversations, they have learned that the Ontario Securities Commission is also investigating and a search warrant was executed at Renton’s home earlier this year where electronic devices were seized.
The Anti-Rackets Branch is looking for anyone with information to come forward.
